55,000 fans ring in the new season

Borussia officially rang in the 2018/19 campaign on Sunday with its traditional family day. There was plenty for the fans to enjoy with at the season opener sponsored by Postbank, including a friendly win for the Foals.

More than 55,000 supporters basked in the glorious summer weather at BORUSSIA-PARK and there were plenty of activities for them dotted around the club grounds, from football darts to simply enjoying a refreshing drink or two in the beer garden.

The family day also offered another chance for the fans to get up close and personal with their heroes. After the 5-1 friendly victory over FC Wegberg-Beeck in front of 10,000 spectators, the players swapped their boots for permanent markers to sign countless autographs, as well as pose for selfies with the visiting supporters. The team then took to the main stage to greet the thousands of green-and-white donned fans. “I’ve already been here a few times now, but the atmosphere is just as impressive every year,” said captain Lars Stindl.

There was also a moving moment for Michaël Cuisance, as the youngster was presented with his 2017/18 Player of the Season award in front of the cheering crowd. “It’s such an amazing setting,” said new signing Florian Neuhaus. “I’ve never experienced anything like this with my previous clubs.” Fellow newcomer Michael Lang was also impressed: “It really gets you excited for the new season. I can’t wait to walk out at the stadium soon.”

"The adrenaline is rising"

Head coach Dieter Hecking joined his charges on stage and also can’t wait to sink his teeth into the new campaign. “We’ve been up north for two friendlies, we’ve been down south to Lake Tegernsee, and wherever we’ve gone, there have been fans everywhere, just like today,” said Hecking. “We have to dig deep every single matchday for these guys. The adrenaline is rising. We’ve had enough of pre-season – let’s crack on!”
