Stindl is Borussia's Player of the Season

Ultimately, there was one clear winner: Lars Stindl has won Borussia’s Player of the Season awarded – presented by ‘devolo’ – to become Andreas Christensen’s successor to the award.

Voting was open for over a week, but one player quickly emerged as the clear favourite: Lars Stindl. The Fohlenelf captain received 58% of the votes. 13% of fans who voted via the Borussia App selected runner-up and last year’s winner Andreas Christensen, whilst Jannik Vestergaard finished third (10%). Yann Sommer (9%), Thorgan Hazard (4%), Raffael (3%) and Mahmoud Dahoud (3%) also had their names on the ballot.

Fohlenelf top-scorer

Lars Stindl was remarkably consistent for Borussia last season, racking up 44 appearances – 43 of which he started. Stindl scored 18 goals and assisted a further 12, making him by far and away the team’s top scorer. Eleven of his goals and seven of his assists came in the Bundesliga, and in the Europa League he scored five and set up five. The remaining two goals he scored in the campaign came in the DFB-Pokal.

Developing into a leader

The two games in which Stindl found the back of the net twice to level the score after Borussia on both occasions found themselves 2-0 down before going on to win the match, against Leverkusen (3-2) and in Florence (4-2), are simply unforgettable. Lars also showed how far he’s come as a leader in both of these games, as Stindl took on the responsibility that comes with the captain’s armband for this season before developing into one of the Fohlenelf’s most established leaders on the field. He was rewarded for his exceptional performances in mid-May, when Germany manager Joachim Löw gave him his first call-up to the international squad.
