Well-deserved home win

Matthias Ginter and Thorgan Hazard scored a goal each to secure Borussia’s first win of the calendar year, beating Augsburg 2-0 at BORUSSIA-PARK.

42,016 spectators witnessed a dominant first-half performance from the Foals, who looked dangerous time and time again, especially from set-pieces. One of these, a corner, no later than ten minutes into the game resulted in the opening goal. Matthias Ginter jumped the highest to head past a helpless Marwin Hitz.

Borussia failed to build on the lead before half time and sure enough, Augsburg came out stronger after the break, but it was Dieter Hecking’s men who continued to create the better chances, without being able to convert, albeit. The lack of a two-goal cushion made for a nervy end to them match, that was until Thorgan Hazard broke away and put the game to bed in the last minute of normal time.

Team news

Head coach Dieter Hecking made two changes for his team’s first home game of 2018. Michaël Cuisance came in for Christoph Kramer who was ill and Raffael replaced Vincenzo Grifo in the starting XI. Nico Elvedi, Matthias Ginter, Jannik Vestergaard and Oscar Wendt played in a back four in front of Yann Sommer. Denis Zakaria and Cuisance occupied the central midfield positions with Patrick Herrmann and Thorgan Hazard on the wings. Lars Stindl and Raffael were the attacking pairing.

Apart from Kramer (ill), Hecking had to do without six other players due to injury – Raul Bobadilla (pubic bone), Fabian Johnson (back), Ibrahima Traoré (thigh), Tobias Strobl (cruciate ligament rupture), László Bénes (metatarsal) und Mamadou Doucouré (hamstring).
