Wendt extends his stay at Borussia

Defender Oscar Wendt has agreed a one-year contract extension with Borussia which will keep him at the club for an extra year, until 2019.

The 31-year-old Swede today signed a contract with Borussia which will last until June 2019. “Oscar has made himself a crucial part of the side. He is part of the squad committee and is one of our leading players. Therefore we are really happy to reward him with a contract extension,” Borussia sporting director Max Eberl commented. “It was my wish and my goal to extend my contract at the club. I have always said I feel so happy at Borussia. I love playing for this side and I am happy that I can continue doing that for longer,” said Wendt.

Wendt arrived at Borussia in 2011 and since he has made 181 appearances for the Fohlenelf, scoring 13 goals. In the Bundesliga, Wendt has played 137 times for Borussia and netted 11 league goals. The left-back has featured 14 times and scored twice in the DFB-Pokal, while in Europe, the Swede has appeared 12 times in the Champions League (0 goals) and played 17 times in the Europa League (0 goals). The 31-year-old is one of the leading players at Gladbach, is vice-captain and is a part of the squad committee.

28 caps for Sweden

Wendt came to Borussia in 2011 having just won the Danish league title and he instantly became an important player in the Fohlenelf. He made 16 appearances (1 goal) in his first season, before making 28 appearances the following term, scoring once. In the subsequent campaign, Wendt played 18 times (3 goals) and in the last three seasons he has made 36 (2 goals), 39 (3 goals) and 42 appearances (3 goals) respectively.

Wendt began his career in his home country at IFK Göteborg. In total he made 36 appearances (1 goal) in the Swedish first division, before he signed for FC Copenhagen in 2006. With Copenhagen, the 31-year-old won the Danish league title four times and the Danish cup once. In five seasons, the defender played 138 top-flight matches (6 goals) for Copenhagen and made 21 Champions League (0 goals) and 23 Europa League appearances (0 goals). Wendt has won 28 caps for Sweden (0 goals), although in March earlier this year, the left-back announced his retirement from international football.
